Chinese - Beginners 1
A practical introduction to Mandarin Chinese
The course focuses on speaking in Mandarin Chinese. Students learn basic sentence structures and grammatical rules, and acquire a vocabulary of 400 words used in basic conversation. Course texts are written in Pinyin, the widely-used transliteration system for Chinese characters. This allows students to focus on improving their communication skills, both speaking and comprehension. The class meets once a week and students are required to complete the homework assignments sent by the teacher after each lesson.
Chinese – Beginners 2
Build a foundation of vocabulary and sentences
The course focuses on correct sentence structures, which provides a solid foundation for speech. In addition to the basic vocabulary acquired in Level A, 450 new words are taught in Beginners B. During classes, students practice the use of the new vocabulary and sentence patterns. Homework assignments are given every week, as well as a list of new words learnt in class. Course texts are written in Pinyin. The class meets once a week and students are required to complete homework assignments sent by the teacher after each lesson.
Chinese – Intermediate 3
Expand your Mandarin skills
Students practice the use of the new vocabulary and use role-playing to conduct dialogs in order to memorize many of the expressions and nuances used by native Chinese speakers. As with previous courses, Intermediate C increases the scope of vocabulary and improves the students’ use of grammatical structures. Homework assignments are given every week, as well as a list of new words learnt in class. Course texts are written in Pinyin. The class meets once a week and students are required to complete homework assignments sent by the teacher after each lesson.

Expand your Mandarin skills – part 2
The course focuses on enhancing comprehension skills, with special attention devoted to conversational Chinese. Students practice the use of new vocabulary and sentence structure. Each class is comprised of a reading session and a discussion session. Through reading literature, students improve their comprehension and enhance their vocabulary. By conducting discussions, students improve their speaking skills and listening comprehension.

Chinese – Advanced 5
Language, Culture, and Current Events – all in Mandarin
During the course, students are presented with newspaper and TV clippings and articles from the Chinese media. The selected pieces are designed to help students explore some of the major social issues facing Chinese society. Each topic is followed by a live discussion in Chinese. Students continue to practice the use of new vocabulary and sentence structure.
