This course is for

Adult students (over the age of 17) whose native language is not Mandarin Chinese, and who do not speak or read Mandarin Chinese.

Duration

30 weeks.

Course structure and goals

This course is an introduction to reading, writing and speaking Mandarin Chinese. It is the equivalent course to Spoken Chinese Beginners A in vocabulary and grammar, but the focus is broader to include writing and reading Chinese characters.
Students learn the basic principles of writing Chinese characters, including how to write in the correct stroke order. Students are acquainted with basic sentence structures and acquire a vocabulary of 400 words used in basic conversation on a variety of topics.
The class meets once a week and students are required to complete homework assignments sent by the teacher after each lesson.

At the end of the course the student will

Have acquired a strong vocabulary of 400 useful words that will enable students to conduct a basic conversation on a variety of topics, such as greetings, shopping, orientation, transportation and more.
Know all Chinese tones, which are an essential part of Chinese pronunciation.
Know how to construct simple sentences in Chinese using basic grammatical structures.
Be familiar with the Pinyin Romanization system used to transliterate Chinese characters.
Know the correct stroke order for writing Chinese characters.
Be familiar with the radicals of the Chinese characters.
Know how to use a Chinese dictionary.
